Your mileage will vary. This post assumed Ubuntu 25.10, but these problems could be GNOME 49&#8217;s own so you might experience it on other linux distros that uses GNOME 49 as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Settings to Remote login \/ Desktop Sharing (RDP) hangs out of he box<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When I entered &#8220;System -&gt; Remote Desktop&#8221; under Settings app (on Hyper-V) in the first boot right after installation, it will hang<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"763\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-13-1024x763.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-13-1024x763.png 1024w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-13-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-13-768x572.png 768w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-13-403x300.png 403w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-13.png 1196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out it works fine after rebooting again. I installed this over and over and realize it&#8217;s always the first boot that&#8217;d freeze the Remote Desktop settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cryptic error message for failed Remote Login<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you entered the wrong username, you&#8217;ll be greeted with this confusing message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"345\" height=\"165\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-16.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6958\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-16.png 345w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-16-300x143.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 345px) 100vw, 345px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Username and Password changes are glitchy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Changing usernames and password in the Remote Login dialog box does not always immediately take effect. I had to disable and re-enable Remote Login at the top of the settings->system->remote login tab for the change to take effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"699\" height=\"211\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-22.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6977\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-22.png 699w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-22-300x91.png 300w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-22-500x151.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 699px) 100vw, 699px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s confusing when combined with the cryptic error message above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Watch out for case sensitive login name for RDP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Windows&#8217; username is not case sensitive but the RDP implementation on GNOME 49 is case sensitive!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you entered a &#8220;User name&#8221; in the first tab of the native RDP client (mstsc) that happens to match any of your Windows account (regardless of case since Windows don&#8217;t care about capitalization in user names), <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"403\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-17.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-17.png 403w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-17-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 403px) 100vw, 403px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>it will pull out your Windows account showing the capitalization stored in Windows<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"449\" height=\"260\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-18.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6961\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-18.png 449w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-18-300x174.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But this is where this gets really fucked up (is so misleading that it&#8217;s a user trap): under the hood it&#8217;s your &#8220;User name&#8221; with the exact capitalization typed in the first tab that gets passed to GNOME&#8217;s Remote Login, not what the &#8220;Windows Security&#8221; dialog box showed you when you entered the password! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inconsistent Login Detail defaults between Remote Login and Desktop Sharing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Desktop Sharing and Remote Login are esentially the same thing in terms of users interface, differing only in the port number and whether it reuses an existing screen or start a new graphical login. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless the Login Details for Desktop sharing pre-enters the current session&#8217;s username and a prefilled password that&#8217;s prefilled <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"936\" height=\"688\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-19.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6969\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-19.png 936w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-19-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-19-768x565.png 768w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-19-408x300.png 408w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>while Remote Login prefills nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"904\" height=\"713\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-20.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6970\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-20.png 904w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-20-300x237.png 300w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-20-768x606.png 768w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-20-380x300.png 380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 904px) 100vw, 904px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not like what&#8217;s pre-entered in Desktop Sharing is tied to Linux&#8217;s system user account (login and password pair) anyway so why do it for one (Desktop Sharing) but not the other (Remote Login)? This really looked unpolished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Text RDP file changes needed to securely connect to GNOME&#8217;s remote desktop <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The native Remote Desktop (mstsc)&#8217;s graphical user interface do not contain the option to enable RDSTLS so it has to be written into an <code>.rdp<\/code> file then either loaded or executed.
