I got a black screen if I deviated from <code>gdm<\/code> that only works for GNOME (default), which means no Cinnamon for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the same Hyper-V setup, Cinnamon\/Lightdm does not work on Ubuntu 25.10 either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out <a href=\"https:\/\/unix.stackexchange.com\/questions\/751451\/no-display-manager-after-debian-12-installation-on-hyper-v\"><code>lightdm<\/code> requires the Hyper-V VM created as 2nd Generation<\/a>, which uses UEFI instead of BIOS. It beats me why <code>gdm<\/code> is do not need UEFI while <code>lightdm<\/code> does. Not cool!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"657\" height=\"272\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6943\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-9.png 657w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-9-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-9-500x207.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 657px) 100vw, 657px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Generation 2 VM is another can of worms. The default secure boot uses the Windows Template. Debian\/Ubuntu CD boots with &#8220;<strong>Microsoft UEFI Certificate Authority<\/strong>&#8221; or no Secure Boot (but you&#8217;ll still have to make the installed Debian run with Secure Boot later).
