{"id":5923,"date":"2025-02-11T14:59:46","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T22:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/?p=5923"},"modified":"2025-11-08T23:24:52","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T07:24:52","slug":"hp-54600-series-first-gen-module-compatibility-reasoning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/2025\/02\/11\/hp-54600-series-first-gen-module-compatibility-reasoning\/","title":{"rendered":"HP 54600 Series (First Gen) Module Compatibility Reasoning"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The modules are categorized into these characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plain (oldest, compatible with all): 54650A (GPIB), 54651A (Serial), 54652A (Parallel Printer)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test Automation (<strong>TAM<\/strong>) License\/Memory: 54655A (GPIB), 54656A (Serial + 5 output lines)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FFT\/Time &amp; Math License\/Memory: 54657A (GPIB), 54659B (Serial+Parallel)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Serial + Parallel<\/strong>: 54652B (no FFT), 54659B (with FFT)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The matching oscilloscopes\/logic analyzers are sorted into 3 main sub-generations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Too Old (Cannot understand <strong>Serial+Parallel<\/strong>): 5460XA, 54610A<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Everything in between: 5460XB, 54610B, 54620X<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Too New (Cannot understand <strong>TAM<\/strong>): 54615\/6B (I suspect C too), 54645A\/D<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Logic Analyzers (54620A\/C) is considered &#8220;Everything in between&#8221; and it gleefully disregards the Test Automation\/FFT features as they are only relevant to analog signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only FFT modules have a RTC to keep time. TAM modules are too primative to have this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;Too Old&#8221; scopes have newer firmware available that handles FFT (which you need to upgrade by a chip swap if the firmware is too old), but they still don&#8217;t understand multiplexing serial &amp; parallel lines they are stuck with 54657A. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>54657A covers the broadest range of oscilloscopes (everything). 5460XA with a firmware lower than 2.2 can be updated to use this module.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1021\" height=\"296\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image.png 1021w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-300x87.png 300w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-768x223.png 768w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/image-500x145.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1021px) 100vw, 1021px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want the FFT and serial port together. There&#8217;s only one choice which is 54659B and you have to avold the &#8220;Too Old&#8221; oscilloscopes. 546XXA is no go. That&#8217;s why this blog post explained the reasoning by categories above.
