Since Windows Live Mail (WLM)<a href=\"https:\/\/tools.ietf.org\/html\/rfc6154\"> auto-configures<\/a> Gmail, the special folders are automatically determined and <strong>they cannot be specified<\/strong>. Please leave Root folder path alone like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2340\" width=\"367\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image.png 367w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-246x300.png 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><figcaption>Gmail IMAP folder settings are automatically configured when established automatically in Windows Live Mail<br>Do NOT change the settings. If you do manual configuration, make sure you mirror these settings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically Gmail decided <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">with the exception of <code>Inbox<\/code><\/span>, which stays at root, all &#8220;<em>System labels<\/em>&#8221; goes under the subfolder <code>[Gmail]<\/code>. However user-created labels (simply called &#8220;<em>Labels<\/em>&#8220;) stay at root folder level. For example, I have a user folder called <code>Save<\/code> enabled for IMAP, the folder tree with the Gmail account looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"141\" height=\"154\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2341\"\/><figcaption>Example of Gmail IMAP folder structure. Inbox and user-created labels stays on top. <br>ALL <em>system labels<\/em> go under the subfolder <code>[Gmail]<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Because you cannot specify where the Trash folder is, delete button really mean delete (to a recycle bin that&#8217;s purged in 30 days), not archive to a folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also because Gmail is smart enough to save a copy in your <code>[Gmail]\/Sent Mail<\/code> folder <strong>if you use their SMTP (out-going mail) server<\/strong>, the &#8220;<em>Save copy of sent message in &#8216;Sent Items&#8217; folder<\/em>&#8221; setting on Windows Live Mail is irrelevant: you cannot choose not to save it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"458\" height=\"122\" src=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-2.png 458w, https:\/\/wonghoi.humgar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/image-2-300x80.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And yes, I tried it checking this (for other non-Gmail accounts), and confirmed that Gmail is smart enough to save one copy (not one from the SMTP and one executed by the client).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So here&#8217;s a summary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gmail automatically configures and <strong>dictates<\/strong> IMAP&#8217;s special folders. You have no choice<\/li><li>No special folder choice means you cannot reroute &#8216;delete&#8217; to mean archive\/move<\/li><li>If you use Gmail&#8217;s SMTP server (likely), it will save a copy of outgoing mail to <code>[Gmail]\/Sent Mail<\/code> folder. You cannot turn this off. <\/li><li>&#8220;<em>Save copy of sent message in the &#8216;Sent Items&#8217; folder<\/em>&#8216; is irrelevant if you use Gmail&#8217;s SMTP server.
